(i) Duration of the diseases:
(ii) Cause of the diseases. Give one example of each type.
Ans. Health Health is described as the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. Being healthy is far more different than just being free of diseases.
(i) Duration of diseases: Some diseases last for longer time than others.
- Acute diseases: Diseases are described as being acute, when their symptoms are quickly visible in the body. e.g., Common cold.
- Chronic diseases: These types of diseases are long-term, with the symptoms lasting for months or years. Such diseases are called chronic diseases. e.g., Elephantiasis.
- Congenital diseases: These diseases are present since birth. They are caused due to genetic defects and cannot be cured easily.
- Acquired diseases: These diseases are those which develop after birth. Acquired diseases can be broadly classified into two types : (a) communicable diseases (b) noncommunicable diseases.
(ii) Causes of diseases:
- Pathogens: Many pathogens like mosquitoes and different types of protozoa spread diseases like malaria, dengue, etc.
- Pollution : Many industries spread diseases like Asthma. Industries pollute air and water through harmful emissions of gases and waste.
- Genes: Some diseases are present since birth. They are caused due to genetic factors.
- Deficiency of nutrients: Deficiency of many nutrients causes diseases, e.g., Deficiency of vitamin D causes Rickets, iron causes anaemia and so on.
