Q. (a) Use of fertilizers for a long period causes soil pollution. Explain it.
(b) Water pollution leads to soil pollution. Justify this statement.
Ans. (a) Water dissolves the fertilizers and pesticides which gets absorbed ultimately into the soil. It forms the soil in the following ways:
(i) It kills the useful microorganisms which help in recycling soil.
(ii) It destroys the soil structure and changes soil chemistry.
(iii) It makes soil dependent and causes biological magnification of harmful chemicals.
(b) Pollutants in air → Pollute water → Pollutes soil.
Pollutants from soil gets washed into the water bodies from where they further get absorbed into soil leading to contamination of soil.
