Why does an object float or sink when placed on the surface of water?

Q. Why does an object float or sink when placed on the surface of water?
Ans. The force due to the gravitational attraction of the earth on an object pulls it downwards. There is an upthrust of water on the object, which pushes it upwards. The upthrust depends upon the density of the body as compared to the density of water. If the density of the object is less than that of water it floats. If the density of the object is greater than that of water it sinks.
