(b) In the cold weather, the water present in the air, condenses out around the suspended particulate, unburnt carbon particles or hydrocarbons and gases to form yellow coloured smog. The nitrogen and sulphur present in the coal and petroleum (fossil fuel) are burnt to form oxides of nitrogen and sulphur which dissolve in rain to form acid rain.
