A BOOK I HAVE RECENTLY READ

I have recently read ‘Koni’, a novel by Moti Nandi. It is an inspirational story of a swimmer called Koni and her coach Khidda. Koni’s original name is Kanakchampa Pal. Khidda’s original name is Khitish Sinha. Koni is a girl of a poor family living in a slum. Khidda is a ruthless but determined coach. He is determined to make Koni a champion. Koni fights all odds and fulfils her coach’s dream. This is actually a story of true determination and sportsman spirit. It shows that if anything is done passionately, success is sure to come. Besides, there is no alternative to hardwork. After reading Koni’s story, I also feel inspired. I have read the book many a time, but the book is yet to lose its charm.

MY FAVOURITE AUTHOR

Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay is my favourite author. He is called the immortal artist of words in Bengali literature. Among his famous novels, I have read ‘Pather Dabi’, ‘Devdas’, ‘Griha Daha’, ‘Parineeta’ and obviously ‘Srikanta’. ‘Srikanta’ is his autobiographical novel. He wrote many stories like ‘Abhagir Swargo’, ‘Bindur Chhele’, ‘Ekadoshi Bairagi’, ‘Sati’, ‘Ramer Sumati’, ‘Lalu’, etc. I have read most of them. Sarat Chandra’s style of writing is very simple. Anybody can understand his works at one go. Besides writing in a lucid language, he wrote for the poor and the downtrodden. His books aim at becoming the voice of the voiceless multitude. Because of such style and purpose of writing, he attracts me most. I believe, Sarat Chandra’s works will remain in the list of the best sellers even in the ages to come.

MY HOBBY

A hobby is an activity that makes our leisure hours interesting and joyful. Different persons have different hobbies like collecting stamps, coins or antiques, photography, etc. But my hobby is gardening. It is cheap but educative. I enjoy seeing beautiful flowers, a green lawn and green plants at home. I have a small flower garden in front of our house. I visit my garden every day. I sow seeds, prune branches, dig the soil and water the plants. It gives me great pleasure to see the colourful variety of seasonal flowers blooming in full glory in my garden. I sometimes make a bouquet with them as a present on birthdays and anniversaries. I read many books on gardening to learn more about it. I feel proud when my friends admire my garden.

MY SWEET HOME

Home is where the heart is. One’s own home is always sweet to him. Home is the place where I can get away from the world and be myself. One loves to be at home in the comfort and care of loving family members. I live in a small flat but we have all the facilities within the four walls. I live here with my parents and sister. All of us have an open and warm relationship with each other. Our mornings are busy but from the evening we spend time together till we go to sleep. We share all that we experience throughout the day. The locality we live in is also quiet and trouble-free. The market and the bus-stand are just a stone’s throw from my home. The neighbours are also very helpful. My home is very important for me. It is the sweetest, the loveliest and the best place in the world.

MY FAVOURITE SUBJECT

My favourite subject is English literature. Since my childhood, I have a great fascination for this. I always get good marks in English. My father always tries to guide me and help me learn the subject easily. English is all about learning grammar properly and reading books on several topics. It is an international language and very essential in the job market. Compared to other subjects like History, Geography and Bengali, it does not require much memorising. I practise grammar lessons to enrich myself and read different story books. English is one of the richest and finest languages of the world. I want to study English well and be a professor of English in future.

MY FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL

There are many memorable incidents in life which we can never forget. My first day at school is one such event. I can still remember the morning twelve years back when my parents woke me up and helped me to dress in my school uniform. I started for school with my parents with a throbbing heart. As I entered the school campus, I saw many boys and girls. After meeting the headmaster, I was taken to a classroom. There were many boys and girls of my age sitting on the benches. For some time I was nervous and frightened. Gradually I shared a word or two with other students. Then the teacher came and introduced herself to all of us. There were just four periods on the first day. As the closing bell rang, I found my parents waiting for me. I was really happy at the end of the day. I shared my experience with my parents on my way back home from school.

MY TOWN

I live in the small town of Dakshineswar. It is situated in the district of North 24 Parganas. It is about 10 kms away from Kolkata. It is an old town on the river Hooghly. It is well connected with Kolkata by railways and bus routes. It has a population of about one lakh. Most people here are either servicemen or businessmen. We have all amenities in our town. There are four post offices, a number of primary schools, secondary schools and two colleges too. There are four banks, two hospitals, six market complexes and two cinema halls in our town. The town has many places worth seeing, like Dakshineswar Kalimandir, Adyapeath, etc. Festivals like Durga Puja, Kali Puja, etc. are celebrated with great enthusiasm. There are sufficient arrangements of games and sports in our town. But our town suffers from some problems like bad roads and improper drainage system. Despite these shortcomings our town is very dear to me.

MY AIM IN LIFE

An aimless person is like a ship without a rudder. I have already fixed my aim in life. I wish to become a teacher. The motto ‘plain living and high thinking’ inspires me to take up this noble profession. I want to be a teacher like my father. I am inspired by his way of spreading education sincerely. I am fully aware of the hardships of a teacher’s life. Still | want to be a teacher. I want to nurture the tender minds of the pupils. As a teacher I can help in widening their outlook on life. MY FAVOURITE FESTIVAL

In our drab and dull life, festivals add a new colour, develop a sense of togetherness and enthuse people. Among the festivals of Bengal, I like Durga Puja most of all. It is observed in autumn and is the greatest festival of the Bengalis Durga Ma is the epitome of power and peace. The festival lasts for four days and is celebrated with pomp and ceremony. People throng the well-decorated puja pandals in new clothes to get a glimpse of the idols. On the final or fourth day the idols are immersed in the river. We feel sad and wait eagerly for the next puja to come. The significance of a festival like Durga Puja is immense. The puja is the time for social get-togethers. Schools and colleges remain closed for many days during the puja. People of different religions join in this puja and a wonderful bond of amity and unity grows among all.

MY FAVOURITE SEASON

The rainy season is my favourite season. After the tremendous heat of the summer, the rains come as a most welcome visitor. It stays during the months of July and August. During this season the sky remains overcast with clouds and sometimes it rains cats and dogs. Nature appears in full bloom. The plants look fresh and green. The frogs croak, the peacocks dance, the farmers smile and the children enjoy playing in the rain. For our country, it is the most important season as we depend so much on our agriculture. The farmers plough their fields and sow seeds of paddy, the main crop of West Bengal. But the season also causes disasters like floods. It brings misery to the people, especially the poor. Many diseases like cholera, malaria and diarrhoea break out. People living in cities and towns face problems due to waterlogging. Nevertheless, I like this season the most.

POLLUTION

Pollution is one of the major global problems nowadays. It is one of the main products of industrialisation and urbanisation. There are mainly three kinds of pollution-air pollution, sound pollution and water pollution. Air is polluted by the smoke of vehicles and factories. Sound pollution is caused by the horns of vehicles, bursting of crackers and indiscriminate use of loudspeakers. Water pollution is the result of untreated sewage, pesticides and factory wastes. Deforestation is also a cause of pollution. Pollution causes many harmful diseases. Air pollution leads to diseases like T.B. and asthma. Sound pollution can make us deaf and cause nervous breakdown. Water pollution gives us skin diseases. Marine life is also affected creating a perilous situation for aquatic plants and animals. It is high time we control pollution and save our earth. FIFA U-17 WORLD CUP 2017

FIFA U-17 World Cup is a biennial international football tournament. Male players under the age of seventeen take part in it. In 2017 the venue of the tournament was India. The country was the host of FIFA’s tournament for the first time. 24 national teams including that of the host India took part in it, 52 matches were played between 6 and 28 October, 2017 in six stadiums situated in six cities of the country namely, Kolkata, Kochi, New Delhi, Navi Mumbai, Guwahati and Margao. In the final, held in Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium, English colts scripted history. They clinched the trophy for the first time by beating Spain 5-2. Record number of people in the history of the tournament came to watch the matches. About 13, 47, 133 people attended the world cup matches this time. Undoubtedly this spectacular event has boosted Indians’ craze for football.

KANYASHREE PRAKALPA

The Government of West Bengal has taken an initiative to improve the life and the status of the girls. The scheme undertaken by them in this regard is Kanyashree Prakalpa. The aim of this project is to help backward families with cash so that they do not get their daughters married before eighteen years. Besides, the girls of these families can continue their studies despite tough economic condition. Under this scheme, girls aged between 13 and 18 years and enrolled in class VII – XII in government recognized schools get an annual scholarship of Rs 750. Besides, a one-time grant of Rs 25,000 is given to the girls when they turn 18. But for getting this grant, a girl should remain unmarried and pursue her study. The United Nations honoured Kanyashree with highest public service award in 2017. Till date no less than 42 lakh girls of the state have been benefitted. This unique scheme has, no doubt, helped the girls of the state a lot.
