WHAT IS A REPORT?

A report is usually meant for the newspaper and other media. So different types of incidents and accidents are included in a report.

HOW TO WRITE A NEWSPAPER REPORT

  1. Read the points or outlines again and again so that you make yourself understand the incident or subject of the report.
  2. Then write the heading of the report in capital letters.
  3. Next, write the name or designation of the reporter below the heading.
  4. Now, write the name of the place and the date of reporting at the top left-hand corner of the reports.
  5. The report should be written in brief and in simple language.
  6. Use mainly perfect tense as the report is written after the incident.
  7. Use passive voice, for the description of the incident must be impersonal in nature.

WORKED-OUT EXAMPLES

1. Write a report (within 80 words) on a train accident using the following points: 
TRAIN ACCIDENT IN ANDHRA PRADESH: 5 KILLED

Hyderabad, November 22: At least 5 people were killed and several others injured in an early morning train accident today. The accident happened when Hampi Express collided with a stationary goods train in Penukonda at around 3 a.m. Hampi Express overshot signal and hit the goods train. It was travelling from Hubli to Bengaluru. Two bogies of Hampi Express have derailed. Several passengers are still trapped inside the mangled bogies of the train. Gas cutters are being used to cut the coaches. The injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals. Senior railway officials have reached the spot and are supervising the rescue operations.
2. Write a newspaper report on the celebration of Kanyashree Divas in your school on the basis of the points given below: 
ABC SCHOOL OBSERVES KANYASHREE DIVAS

Barasat, August 14: With the rest of the state, ABC School observed Kanyashree Divas today in the school premises in a fitting manner. Dr Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, the local MP graced the chair of the chief guest. Other luminaries like the filmmaker Dr Satarupa Sanyal, the novelist Tilottama Bhattacharya and the educationist Miratun Nahar were present there. The Headmistress of the school presided over the function. The programme started with Tagore’s Song ‘Sankocher Biwhalata’ sung by a band of students of class nine and ten. It was followed by the inspiring speeches of the guests. They all appreciated women empowerment through Kanyashree Prakalpa, an award-winning unique scheme initiated by the state government. Hooghly, June 23: At least 20 people have been killed and more than 10 injured by lightning strikes here today. Most of the people who died were working on paddy fields during torrential rains on Tuesday. Many of them were children and women. One man taken to hospital in Srirampur said that when it had been raining, they immediately took shelter under a tree. Lightning hit them there and they fell unconscious. Crops in the fields were heavily damaged. West Bengal is prone to thunderstorms but this year they have been particularly severe. Experts suggest a general rise in temperature and deforestation may be factors. The chief minister of the state said she was ‘deeply anguished’ by the loss of life.

Mangalore, May 22: Eight people escaped the crash of an Indian Airlines plane with 166 people on board. The plane overshot a hilltop runway in Mangalore Bajpe Airport and plunged over a cliff. At least some of the survivors managed to jump from the wreckage just before the plane burst into flames. Firefighters struggled to reach the smoking wreckage of the plane. Many of the dead were strapped into their seats, their bodies burned beyond recognition. Relatives of the victims, who had been waiting at the airport for the plane’s arrival, stood near the wreckage weeping. The police and forensic experts are carrying on the investigation. The airport authority at Mangalore said, accidents of this type, known as ‘runway excursions’ are fairly common but majority end without injury or damage.

Kolkata, Sept. 16: A massive fire broke out in the early hours today at the congested Bagree Market. The fire continued to rage even after nine hours. However, no casualty has been reported so far. About 30 fire tenders have been pressed into service to douse the fire. Those who have lost everything in the blaze are mainly the owners of cosmetics and toy stores. The shop owners had not installed fire safety equipments despite warnings from the municipal corporation. Besides, they had stacked inflammable articles. As a result, the blaze spread quickly and the fire fighting operation became tough. However, people were evacuated from adjacent buildings because cracks have appeared in the building of the market. A forensic team visited the place to ascertain the cause of fire which is yet to be known.

Kolkata, Nov. 14: An elderly couple was found murdered in their apartment at Behala in South Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon. The police said, the couple had been initially hit on the head with a blunt instrument. The body of the husband, Partha Roy Chowdhury (78) was found on the floor of their living room with multiple injury marks on the face and head. His wife, Ratna Roy Chowdhury (75) was lying on the bed with her throat slit. The police suspect robbery as the motive behind the killing. They are looking into the maid’s role in it. The neighbours said that the couple was very friendly and their flat was open to visitors. Many of them often dropped in for a cup of tea. One of them discovered the dead bodies in the flat while she had knocked at the door and found it unlocked.

Digha, November 12: A weekend trip to Mandarmani beac ended in tragedy for three youths from Kolkata. They drowned after being swept away by strong waves on Sunday afternoon. Ignoring the bad weather they were trying to have a bath in the sea. Suddenly they encountered strong currents which pushed them further and they ultimately disappeared in waters. Locals dived into the water and recovered one body belonging to Debashis Ganguly. A search is on for the other two. Debashis along with his two friends worked in a private company in Bidhannagar. All the three friends were in their mid-20s.
8. Write a report (in about 100 words) about a girl who succeeded in avoiding untimely marriage to pursue her studies: 
15-YEAR-OLD CALLS POLICE TO STOP HER MARRIAGE

Bardhaman, Nov. 17: A 15-year-old girl acted against her own family members and called the police from her wedding pandal in Paharpur village today. The police later stopped the marriage. The groom was also underage and the family members of both, the girl and the boy, work as agricultural labourers. The girl said that she followed her teacher’s word that child marriage is a crime. She now wants to complete her studies. The girl is now in class nine. The district administration has assured her of giving all sorts of help to carry on her studies. The family members of both the sides have been made aware of the law. Such a crime may attract imprisonment of two years or a fine of one lakh rupees or both under the prevention of Child Marriage Act.

Kolkata, September 7: A heavy downpour over the past 48 hours has paralysed normal life in Kolkata. It has caused waterlogging in different parts of Central Kolkata and a few parts of North and South Kolkata. The roads have become submerged under water. Daily commuters, especially officegoers and school children, are finding it difficult to wade through knee-deep water and reach their destinations. Most of the vehicles have stopped plying. The people on the roads are suffering from great hardship as the few buses plying are over-crowded. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has pressed many water pumps into service to remove the water. According to Alipore Weather Department, the rainfall is the result of a depression in the Bay of Bengal. It has predicted more rains in the next few days.
