WHAT IS REPORT WRITING?
Report Writing is meant for the newspaper and other media. So different types of incidents and accidents are included in a report.
HOW TO WRITE A REPORT
- Follow the outlines and information carefully.
- Without any introduction begin writing with the information provided. Sometimes with some reflective introduction, report may also be begun.
- Order of points should be maintained mainly.
- Language will be simple and clear.
- Mainly past tense is used as the report is written after the incident.
- The description of the incident or accident would be impersonal in nature. So passive voice is suited better.
- There will be an eye-catching heading. The place and date of reporting must be mentioned.
WORKED-OUT EXAMPLES
1. The area where your school is located has many roadside stalls which sell fast food, cut fruit that are kept uncovered and artificially coloured drinks. Write a report in about 100 words about the unhygienic way in which such kinds of food are kept, the hazards posed to health, steps that need to be taken to check the sale of such food and to increase public awareness about the dangers involved.
FOOD, BAD FOR HEALTH!

Kolkata, January 12: Even food may be bad for health. To see it, you have to go to the footpath stalls beside the Beldanga High School. Those stalls sell fast food, junk food and cut fruit, all are kept uncovered. Besides these, you will find different types of drinks, artificially coloured and scented. But don’t think the sellers are facing loss. On the other hand, they get so many customers that they are becoming prosperous day by day. Here comes the question of consciousness. We are aware of their unhygienic nature, still we buy these daily. Government health department also has some role to play. Initiative of the Health Department and awareness of the public must act together to stop this.
2. Your class went on an excursion to a historical place. Write a report in about 100 words describing the preparations for the tour, the travel arrangements, the historical remains you saw and their significance.
EXCURSION TO NALANDA

Deulpara (Hooghly), December 18: Educational excursion aims at providing students with some practical experiences and knowledge. It helps them to relate with the information provided by the books. That aim was beautifully fulfilled when our Deulpara High School arranged an excursion to Nalanda, the World Heritage site. The arrangement was good and comfortable in respect of transport, food and lodging. The remains of Nalanda gave us a glimpse of our hoary past days of glory. It was a subject of wonder for all of us to think that in those old days thousands of students used to come to study there from the whole eastern part of the world. The tour has left a deep impression on all of us.
3. Suppose you have organized a blood donation camp with a seminar in your club. Write a newspaper report on it.
BLOOD DONATION CAMP AT BARASAT

Barasat, August 14: Agragami Sangha, Barasat, organised a blood donation camp last Sunday. For the last ten years they have been organising such kind of blood donation camp. This year about seventy donors donated blood. The arrangements were up to the mark. A team of doctors from the Barasat General Hospital conducted the total process. The programme started at eight in the morning. Every donor was specially honoured by the club by giving them the life membership of the club in addition to a certificate issued by the Government Hospital. At the end of the programme, a seminar was also organised. Some well known doctors of Kolkata and Chennai participated. The aim was to grow awareness among common people about blood donation.

Kolkata, March 17: With nightfall, car driving in Kolkata becomes hor Several times it has snatched away several. lives. It was about 2 a.m. at night. A woman with her two daughters were sound asleep on a pavement in Central Avenue area. A speeding Honda City lost control, rushed onto the footpath and ran over the woman’s leg. She was severely injured. Luckily the two daughters escaped. The policemen on duty came to the spot and the injured woman was hospitalised then and there. She was in critical condition. Following the footage from closed-circuit camera the police tracked the culprit driver. He was arrested. The driver is a film star and was probably in drunken condition, according to the police sources.

It was against the West Indies. In the limited over daynight match India has not only defeated the West Indies but has broken some previous records. Now Virat Kohli has become the highest run getter in one day internationals. He alone had scored a double century where the total run of the team crossed four hundred. In response, the West Indies completed their innings with 345. Upto the twenty-fifth over they gave a good fight. But Umesh Yadav with a good spell of four overs took their five vital wickets. Virat was selected as man-of-the-match.

ROAD MISHAP TOLLS A SCHOOL GIRL

Barasat, June 15: Common people, busy with their everyday work, had to witness the death of a school girl in front of their eyes here today. They seemed really helpless when a girl on her way to school was run over by a speeding bus at about 10 a.m. near Champadali More. The bus was in competition with another and running at high speed. All of a sudden it appeared in front of the girl. The driver at the last moment lost control. It ran straight over the girl. The driver of the bus managed to flee but the conductor was caught by the public. He was handed over to the local police. The bleeding girl was then carried to the local hospital but declared dead by the doctors. The agitated mob burnt down the bus on the spot. The police-force came and brought the situation under control.

HORRIBLE ROAD ACCIDENT

Malda, December 14: Life started quite smoothly in the morning at Malda town. Lots of people were on the road. But the rhythm broke when at Rathbari More a head-on collision occurred all of a sudden. It was between a minibus and an auto-rickshaw. Both of them were moving at high speed but the auto-rickshaw was reckless. Two office-going persons died on the spot and three other auto passengers were seriously injured. The local public and the shop owners rescued them and took them to a nearby hospital. Agitated people blocked the road. After some time the police came and normalcy was restored.
8. A fire broke out in a Metro Railway Compartment. SUDDEN FIRE DISRUPTED METRO SERVICE

Kolkata, June 05: Metro railway is the real pride of Kolkata and her people. But for the last two years, one after another accidents have been showing us the opposite picture because of poor maintenance. Yesterday, at about 8.45 in the morning, at Tollygunge Station all of a sudden passengers noticed smoke coming out of a compartment. They rang the alarm bell. The train stopped. Becoming panic-stricken all the passengers were in hurry to come out of the compartment. That created a chaotic situation for a period of time. Metro engineers appeared on the spot and brought the situation under control. According to their opinion, it was a case of short-circuit. The compartments were vacated by the police. There was no report of any kind of injury though the passengers had to undergo horrible experiences.

NEW SCHEMES IN SOCIAL WELFARE

Kolkata, Oct 29: The government of West Bengal has launched two new schemes-one for providing financial support system to female head of the family and the other is a package-based health scheme that guarantees cashless secondary and tertiary care treatment of upto Rs 5 lakh at empaneled hospitals every year. Under the first scheme, called Lakshmir Bhandar, Rs 500 per month is directly transferred to women of general category and Rs. 1000 per month to women from reserved categories. Swasthya Sathi was rolled out from February, 2017, whereas Lakshmir Bhandar scheme was launched in 2022. Lakshmir Bhandar is the state’s basic income support programme and it now covers no less than 1.55 crore families. And the main objective behind launching the Swasthya Sathi Scheme is to give the best hospital services to the residents of the state. All applicants for both the schemes are required to submit Adhaar Card, Caste Certificate, Residential Certificate, Bank accounts details, passport size photograph, mobile number, etc. along with the application form. Undoubtedly, both the schemes will push the financial burden of the state. However, the effective delivery of such freebies and welfare schemes is bound to be beneficial for the poor.

BUILDING COLLAPSED PARTIALLY

Malda, March 04: An eighty-year-old unrepaired house created a panic-stricken situation among the inhabitants and the local people here at Mukdampur yesterday. The dangerous condition of the house had been the cause of worry for a long time. On Saturday, a portion of the house collapsed all on a sudden. Nearly 17 families were living on rent in that building. All of them safely came out of the building. The remaining part of the building is tilting in a precarious condition. There was no news of death though at least six people were injured. Twelve families were shifted to some other places after the accident. Fire Brigade officials inspected the spot. They had expressed their opinion that the house should be destructed at the earliest because it might collapse at any moment. They had also given a notice to the owner of the house.

26 KILLED IN A HORRIBLE TRAIN ACCIDENT

Vaizag, July 15: Reports of train accident have now become a daily news. Passengers are raising the question of security being neglected for so long a time, but no one is there to pay heed to their appeals. Yesterday Vaizag witnessed another horrible train accident which made all dumb. It occurred at around 4 in the morning. Because of some unknown reason, three coaches of the Coromondal Express, fell into the river near Vaizag. Death of twenty six passengers has been confirmed until now and those dead bodies have been recovered. About 500 injured passengers were admitted to a nearby hospital. Initially rescue work was disrupted owing to rain and foul weather. The Ministry of Railways has sent special rescue team with a good number of doctors to the spot. The Ministry has also announced compensation for the dead and the injured.

Kolkata, February 04: Kolkata Book Fair in winter is a real pride for the city. People from different parts of the world visit one of the greatest book fairs of the world every year. But this year somehow, lack of proper precaution came forth when a food stall in the fair ground burnt to ashes, at about 3p.m. yesterday. The number of visitors was then growing slowly. Some noticed a blaze coming out of a food stall. Then and there the fire brigade was informed. Within a few minutes, fire tenders brought the fire under control. There was no news of any casualty. Two fire brigade tenders were, however, stationed in the fair ground, after a temporary disruption had been created there.

Barasat, March 17: A State Bank of India’s branch at Barasat was looted in broad daylight. The incident occurred yesterday at about 1p.m. A gang of five robbers all of a sudden appeared on motorbikes. Then no sentry was present in the bank. So, they entered the bank easily with revolvers in hand. They threatened the customers and the staff not to raise their voice. Quickly the telephone connections were snapped. The robbers looted about Rs. 2 lakh cash from the cashvault. Then they escaped safely by bolting the door from outside. The police reached the spot after an hour and started their investigation. No arrest has been reported until now.

LANDSLIDE AT THE PADMA

Jalangi, September 23: For the last few years the river Padma has become a subject of threat especially in rainy seasons for the local people because of landslide. This time the landslide was so devastating that within hours about five hundred mud houses were completely wiped out making at least 12,000 people homeless. Poor people generally lived in that area. About 5000 hectares of agricultural land also went into the river-bed. The people living beside the river Padma appealed to the local administration time and again. But no one paid any heed to their appeal. They wrote letters to different government departments. The district administration is in charge of such kind of main-tenance. But they did near about nothing. The local residents are still trying their level best to protect the bank with boulders. But their efforts were too small to resist the great hunger of the river.

The day was declared as Yoga Day by the United Nations General Assembly. So it was a great moral victory for all the Indians. The Yoga teacher of our school presided over the programme. All the teachers and students actively participated in it. The Yoga teacher showed us some Yoga asanas for good health and concentration. The Headmistress of our school also performed with him. Kolkata, September 6: Yesterday Jodhpur High School observed the World Environment Day in their school premises. It was mainly a tree plantation programme with cultural and social function. The programme started at 7 a.m. with the opening song sung by the boys and girls of the school. Then some speeches were delivered by the president and chief guest of the function. The headmaster of the school. presided over the function. The District Forest Officer was present as the chief guest. It was a joint venture of the school and the State Forest Department. Almost all the students and the teachers were present to take part in planting saplings in the adjacent areas. A sit and draw competition was also organized for the students. Every winner in the competition was given a sapling as a prize. The people present at the function enjoyed it a lot.

DEVASTATING FIRE GUTTED BALLYGUNGE SLUM

Kolkata, May 13: An all-consuming fire turned no fewer than five hundred shanties into ashes in Ballygunge area at midnight yesterday. Three women and four children were charred alive. The dwellers were in deep sleep when the flame engulfed the whole area. Fire engines arrived, but allegedly too late. Five fire tenders fought hard till the morning to bring the fire under control. The government has ordered a high level enquiry to probe the accident. The cause of the blaze is still unknown.
